Environmental Health: Air & Water Guide

HEPA filtration, water testing, PFAS, and optimizing your home environment

You can't out-supplement a toxic environment. Indoor air quality, water contamination (PFAS, lead, chlorine), and EMF exposure are foundational biohacking concerns. This guide covers practical home upgrades ranked by impact and cost.

Environmental Health: Air & Water Guide

Key Takeaways

  • 1Indoor air is often 2–5× more polluted than outdoor, HEPA filtration is the highest-ROI upgrade
  • 2Test your water before buying filters, city reports and home test kits reveal what to target
  • 3Reverse osmosis removes PFAS and fluoride; carbon filters handle chlorine and taste
  • 4Environmental fixes come before supplements, clean inputs, clean outputs

Why Environment Matters

Biohacking focuses heavily on supplements and devices, but environmental exposures are silent multipliers of health risk. PM2.5 air pollution increases cardiovascular mortality. PFAS ('forever chemicals') disrupt hormones. Chlorine in shower water affects skin and hair. Mold causes chronic inflammation.

Optimizing sleep, nutrition, and exercise while breathing polluted air and drinking contaminated water is like tuning a car engine with dirty fuel. Environment is the foundation layer.

Air Quality

Moderate Evidence

Sources of indoor pollution: cooking (gas stoves emit NO₂ and PM2.5), furniture off-gassing (VOCs), mold, pet dander, outdoor pollution infiltration. Bedrooms should be the cleanest space, you spend 8 hours breathing there.

HEPA air purifier: minimum CADR 200+ for bedroom size. Run on high during sleep, auto during day. Brands: Coway, Blueair, IQAir (premium). Replace filters on schedule, dirty filters recirculate particles.

Monitoring: Awair, AirVisual, or PurpleAir for PM2.5, CO₂, VOC tracking. Target PM2.5 < 5 μg/m³ indoors. High CO₂ (>1000 ppm) impairs cognitive function, ventilate or filter.

  • ·Bedroom HEPA purifier: highest ROI environmental upgrade
  • ·Ventilate during/after cooking if using gas
  • ·Monitor PM2.5 and CO₂, you can't fix what you don't measure
  • ·Mold inspection if unexplained fatigue or respiratory issues

Water Quality

Moderate Evidence

Test first: municipal water reports (free annually) plus home test kit (Tap Score, ~$150–250) for PFAS, lead, bacteria, and heavy metals. Well water requires annual testing.

Filtration tiers: carbon block filter (chlorine, taste, some VOCs), reverse osmosis (PFAS, fluoride, arsenic, nitrates), remineralization (RO strips minerals, add back calcium/magnesium).

Shower filter: reduces chlorine exposure to skin and lungs during hot showers. KDF or vitamin C filters, cheap upgrade (~$30–50).

Priority Upgrade Path

Tier 1 ($200–500): bedroom HEPA purifier + shower filter + water test kit. Immediate impact on daily exposure.

Tier 2 ($300–800): under-sink RO system with remineralization. Whole-house if on well water.

Tier 3 ($1000+): whole-house HEPA/UV, professional mold assessment, building biology audit. For serious optimization or health issues.

  • ·Step 1: test water, buy bedroom air monitor
  • ·Step 2: HEPA purifier + shower filter
  • ·Step 3: RO water system based on test results
  • ·Step 4: address mold/VOCs if detected

Community Consensus

r/AirQuality and r/Biohackers recommend HEPA filtration as underrated. Dave Asprey's 'moldy building' experience drove biohacking community awareness of environmental illness. Bryan Johnson filters all water and air in his home.

Consensus: test before you buy expensive filters. Bedroom air and drinking water are the two priorities. Don't obsess over EMF until air and water are handled.
